Vinyl Siding in Salem, Oregon

Why does vinyl siding warp, buckle or crack?
Vinyl expands as it warms and shrinks as it cools, so it is hung loosely rather than fastened tight. The Vinyl Siding Institute’s installation manual spells out how:
- Nails are not driven home. The manual calls for about 1/32 inch of clearance between the nail head and the panel, roughly the thickness of a dime, so the panel can slide.
- Panels stop short of the trim. It calls for a 1/4-inch gap at corner posts and channels, increased to 3/8 inch when the siding goes up in temperatures below 40°F.
Panels installed without that room can ripple and buckle once they heat up, and Salem heats up: the city reached 117°F on June 28, 2021, its hottest day on record. Sunlight reflected from nearby windows can also distort vinyl, even where it was hung correctly. Impact damage is the other kind, from hail, balls and falling limbs; the ice storms of February 2021 and January 2024 brought limbs down across Salem.
Can vinyl siding be repaired panel by panel?
Often it can. Vinyl courses lock into each other, so a contractor can unlock the panel above a damaged one, remove it, slide a new panel in and lock the courses back together. The same goes for panels that were nailed too tight: they can be refastened properly rather than replaced.
Color is the catch. Vinyl fades in the sun, and a new panel in the same color name can look different next to twenty-year-old ones. One workaround is to move a weathered panel from a less visible wall into the damaged spot, and put the new panel where it shows less. A siding repair quote should say how the contractor plans to handle it.
What goes behind vinyl siding?
Vinyl panels overlap loosely so they can move, which means some water gets behind them. What keeps the wall dry is the layer underneath. Oregon’s residential code requires a water-resistive barrier over the whole wall (section R703.2), kickout flashing where a lower roof edge ends against a wall (R703.4), and by default a drainage space of at least 1/8 inch behind the siding (R703.1.1), with exceptions such as a drainage-enhanced barrier. Those references are to the 2023 edition; a 2026 edition is scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2026.
When old vinyl comes off, look at the barrier and sheathing before new panels go on. Rot found there is water behind siding that the vinyl was hiding, and in Salem, repairing sheathing needs a building permit.
Which vinyl siding styles are there?
- Lap siding, in single or double courses that mimic one or two boards per panel
- Dutch lap, with a curved shadow line along each board
- Board-and-batten, a vertical style with raised battens
- Shakes and shingles, molded to look like cedar

Vinyl panels look wavy, have buckled or cracked, or have slipped out of their trim.
Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, so it has to hang loosely on its nails with a gap at every corner post and channel. Panels nailed tight or cut without those gaps can buckle, strong reflected sunlight can distort them, and impacts crack them.
Lap boards have swollen, mushroomed or gone soft at the lower edges, and paint will not stay on.
Hardboard (often called Masonite) and LP Inner-Seal OSB siding are wood-fiber products that soak up water through unsealed edges and nail holes, then swell and lose strength. Both were common on houses built in the 1980s and 1990s, and both class-action settlements closed to claims years ago.

Common questions
Why is my vinyl siding wavy?
Vinyl that was nailed tight, or cut without room to expand at the trim, can buckle as it heats up. Strong sunlight reflected from nearby windows can also distort it. A contractor can tell which it is by checking whether the panels still slide on their nails.
Can one damaged vinyl panel be replaced?
Usually. Vinyl panels lock into one another, so the panel above can be unlocked, the damaged one swapped out, and the courses locked back together. The harder part is color, because vinyl fades and a new panel may not match its weathered neighbors.
Does vinyl siding need house wrap in Oregon?
Vinyl goes over a water-resistive barrier like any other siding. Oregon's residential code also calls for flashing at openings, kickout flashing where a lower roof edge meets a wall and, by default, a drainage space behind siding, so ask the contractor how their installation meets those requirements.
