Common questions
Should I repair my siding or replace it?
Repair when the damage is contained: a few rotted boards, a leak at one flashing, woodpecker holes or a buckled vinyl panel, with sound sheathing behind. Replacement is worth pricing when swelling, rot or peeling panels show up on several walls, when the siding is a product no longer made, or when the sheathing is soft in more than one place.
When does siding work in Salem need a building permit?
Replacing or repairing siding on its own is exempt from a City of Salem building permit unless the wall must be fire-resistive. A permit is required when the sheathing underneath is repaired or replaced, and when T1-11 siding that also acts as structural sheathing is replaced. The city also lists dry rot repair among work that always needs a permit, so ask the city before a rot repair. Historic properties need design review before a change of siding type, style or material.
