How is fiber cement siding installed differently?

Fiber cement does the same job as other siding, but a few details set it apart:

• It is heavy and rigid. Boards take more handling than vinyl or wood, and long lengths need support while they are carried and hung.
• Cutting it makes silica dust. OSHA’s respirable crystalline silica standard for construction lists specific saws and dust controls for cutting fiber cement board, so expect a saw fitted with dust collection, used outdoors.
• Clearances are part of the instructions. James Hardie calls for at least 6 inches between its siding and the finished grade, and 1 to 2 inches between roofing and the bottom edge of siding and trim, so the boards are not left sitting in water.
• The wall behind it follows Oregon code. That means a water-resistive barrier, kickout flashing where a lower roof edge meets a wall, and by default a drainage gap of at least 1/8 inch behind the siding under section R703.1.1 of the 2023 Oregon Residential Specialty Code (a 2026 edition is due to take effect on October 1, 2026).

Every maker publishes its own nailing, joint and flashing details. Ask which instructions the contractor will follow, and whether the quote includes the trim that goes with them.

Primed or prefinished boards?

Primed boards go up bare of color and are painted on site. That gives a free choice of paint, but the painting has to fit the weather: paints carry minimum temperatures and dew-point limits, and in Salem the dry months from June through September make that easiest.

Prefinished boards arrive painted from the factory; James Hardie calls its factory finish ColorPlus. There is less painting on site, but cut edges and nail heads still get treated the way the maker specifies, and color choices are limited to the maker’s range.

Replacing hardboard, OSB or T1-11 with fiber cement

Fiber cement is one of the materials quoted when swelling hardboard or OSB siding or damaged T1-11 has to come off. The tear-off is when the real scope shows up:

• Rotted sheathing is repaired before the new siding goes on, and in Salem that repair needs a building permit.
• T1-11 that was also the structural sheathing needs a City of Salem building permit to replace, because taking it off removes part of the wall’s structure, not just its covering.
• Style is a choice, not a given. Fiber cement lap boards can replace lap hardboard, and vertical fiber cement panels, such as James Hardie’s HardiePanel, keep a panel look like T1-11’s.

Is fiber cement a good fit for Salem’s weather?

Salem’s weather mostly asks siding to shed winter rain: roughly six to seven inches a month from November through January, according to NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals. Fiber cement handles that when the flashing, barrier and drainage gap behind it are right, and when its clearances are kept.

Heat and impact are the other tests. Salem hit 117°F on June 28, 2021, its hottest day on record, and fiber cement does not soften in heat the way vinyl can. Ice storms in February 2021 and January 2024 brought down trees and limbs across the city, and a cracked fiber cement board can be replaced on its own.

On fire, James Hardie lists its siding as noncombustible under ASTM E136. After Senate Bill 83 repealed Oregon’s statewide wildfire hazard map in 2025, no state rule requires it; that choice is yours.
